Miss Hmong Colorado Mai Choua Lee, hosted a fundraising party at the Broomfield United Methodist Church this past month on August 25. The evening started with speeches and performances, then transformed into a night of dancing. Over 150 people were present and more than $1,000 was raised for the cause.
A requirement to be Miss Hmong Colorado is to lead and organize a fundraising event during her reign for a non-profit organization of choice. Lee chose the Hmong Student Association of Colorado (HSAC) as her non-profit organization to fundraise for, as well as the Miss Hmong CO Pageant. Proceeds from the event will be going towards the HSAC Scholarship and this year’s Miss Hmong CO Pageant. HSAC is a student organization that is geared towards promoting higher education in the Hmong community and educating the public about the Hmong, which is something that Lee is passionate about.
Her service project as Miss Hmong CO is to encourage the youth to pursue higher education and also, encourage the Hmong youth to preserve their Hmong language and culture. Some other events that Lee has completed as Miss Hmong CO include a singing competition, Colorado Hmong Idol, and a summer Hmong language and culture class.
