Hello AAm Readers, Fall is officially here and students are back in school! I’m proud to say that last month the U.S. College Board announced that Asian American students achieved the best scores in the 2009 U.S. SAT college entrance exams. Although we strive to break our “Asian-American-model-minority” stereotype, I appreciate the foundation of a good work ethic and the importance of education that is emphasized in our Asian American families. Keep up the great work to all of our students as they embark on another year of learning!
The month of September starts a new chapter in my personal life that I am anxious for! In short, it is never too late to do what you love! Take the advice of Richard Suinn, the first Asian American to be elected as the American Psychological Association President and also a former Fort Collins, Colo. mayor. He says, “Persevere in your work, have patience, be willing to use opportunitites to discover your talents... and always believe in yourself.” Professor Suinn shares his unique professional journey in our Spotlight feature this month.
Our cover story highlights the unique sport of Japanese martial arts. From competition to spirituality, those who practice the art form receive numerous benefits whether for health, exercise or selfdefense reasons. The centuries-old sport has grown more and more prevalent in the U.S. with several hundred dojos in Colorado alone.
Lastly, Asian Avenue magazine is thrilled to announce its partnership with the Isle Casino in Black Hawk. Beginning this month, we are organizing bus trips taking our readers from Denver up to the casino for a delicious buffet and a few hours to play your luck at the machines or at the tables! All ages (above 21) are welcome to attend! Also, our second Asian American Cinema and Cuisine event is coming up on October 7th. Come enjoy a night of good conversation and food, while we watch the 2009 comedic film “White on Rice.” Hope to see you at these upcoming events!
Carpe Diem! Annie Guo President, Asian Avenue magazine
