Tucked in a little corner on 6th Avenue and Sable Boulevard is Tea Station, a family business that has been afloat through the economy’s ups and downs. There is no secret to this relative success beyond just simple hard work and dedication by the family to their business front.
Chef Nguyen and son, Binh Nguyen run the business with a clear understanding of their clienteles: the blue collar workers of Aurora that enjoy good and reasonably priced Chinese food. This reflects in their cooking, with honest-to-goodness dishes that hold no pretense of being “upper class,” yet simple and delicious in their own ways.
We had a taste of the chicken wings appetizer, which was voted the #1 Best Chicken Wings in 2010 by the Aurora Sentinel. If you’re like me, and you hear “wings,” two things come to mind: KFC and Wingstop. But I can honestly say that Tea Station’s wings are my new favorites. Crispy on the outside, tender on the inside, perfectly salted and peppered, the wings were not doused in sauce but remained juicy. Served on a platter of diced onions and jalapenos, they maintained just the right amount of spice.
We also tried some entrees: the Mongolian Tofu and Onions, and the Pineapple Shrimp and Black Mushroom. The tofu was seasoned in Mongolian sauce, which had a sweet and spicy flavor but not overwhelmingly so. Served with sautéed onions, they were simple, easy and carried a lightness that is often absent in many sauce-based dishes. As for the pineapple shrimp, I initially worried that it may be either too sweet or too sour, depending on the usage of the pineapple. Surprisingly, it had just the right amount of both. The black portobellos added a nice chewy texture to the tender shrimps.
I also had my favorite boba tea: the honey milk tea. Call me a critic, but I am rarely satisfied with honey milk tea at the many boba shops around town. Usually they don’t have the right amount of sweetness—often too sweet. But Tea Station was true to their name, and I greatly enjoyed the drink.
The most “satisfying” aspect of dining at Tea Station is that you can “fill your belly without hurting it,” as my mom would say, to mean that the food is good and plentiful for a very reasonable price. Furthermore, Tea Station is offering an incredible deal all day every day: a $5 menu consisting of many popular dishes paired with either steamed or fried rice. You can expect to get a fulfilling meal for a flat $5, no gimmicks involved. Grab two or three orders and they’ll even deliver it to your house—sounds like just the thing for lazy bums…like me. So if you live nearby, or happen to be in the area, you can feel confident to walk into Tea Station expecting a good meal without first checking out the menu at the door.
