So what does “Yabby” mean? Go ahead in your best Crocodile Dundee accent say “Yabby–Australian for crawfish” (this may remind you of a well-known beer commercial).
It seems like these types of seafood eateries are popping up everywhere around town but what sets Yabby Hut apart from the rest is their dedication to quality. Located in a tucked away strip mall in Lakewood you would only find the restaurant if you knew what you were looking for, and Yabby Hut patrons certainly know what they are looking for. Delicious seafood.
So how does Yabby Hut keep people from across the city trekking back? Linh Nguyen, the restaurant’s manager said, “We focus on quality not quantity.” Sourcing their supply of seafood from all coasts—the crawfish from Louisiana, the lobster from Maine, the blue crab from Maryland and so on—they keep their supply up to standard by going to suppliers with the freshest and highest quality seafood. That coupled with their unique and secret spices and sauces produce a savory product.
Yabby Hut offers specials throughout the week. On Mondays, you can get oysters for $.85 a pop or a half dozen for $5.10; Tuesdays offer $2 off each pound of crawfish; and Wednesdays you can get a whopping $5 off per lobster. What goes great with your bag of seafood?
Beer. On Sunday and Mondays, all beers are only $2 and during the rest of the week, it’s $2.50 for domestics and $3 for premiums.
If you’ve never eaten at Yabby Hut before you might wonder what the eating etiquette is. Simple, there is none. Orders of seafood are boiled in spices and then mixed in a plastic bag with your choice of sauces, spices and level of heat. When the orders come to your table piping hot there is only one way eat it—with your hands. Go ahead and ask any of the servers for a utensil and they’ll tell you, “we prefer not to spoon and we don’t give a fork.”
As Nguyen says, “it’s supposed to be eaten with your hands.” There is really no clean way to eat it, but don’t worry they have bibs to keep your clothes from getting messy.
Once you have satisfied yourself with all kinds of seafood make sure to ring the bell next to the door on your way out. Yabby! Time to head home, feeling pleased and stuffed from your adventurous dining experience.
